Ansty vs Keymer & Hassocks
Somerville Cup Final
K & H's undefeated run in League and Cup games stretching back to 4/2/06 finally came to an end as they exited the Somerville Cup in an ugly bruising contest played out on a granite hard pitch. To add to the theatrics the game kicked off with a match ball pumped up to near cannonball density which the players fortunately managed to have changed.
For the record a 3-1 defeat with James Harris notching the K & H goal before the game turned sour for him as he had to be substituted with possible concussion after hitting his head on the aforementioned surface.Ansty equalised through a quality ball into the box.
After the break both sides had chances but Ansty looked the stronger and finally went in front when the K & H defence confidently appealed for offside only to be astounded when it was not given.
The K & H players now began to feel a disproportionate number of decisions were not going their way and K & H MOM Ian Smith bravely volunteered to raise this concern with the Referee (thereby assuring iconic status for all time in the Club's hall of fame) after a hotly disputed free kick was awarded just outside the box.Whatever was said appeared to be not well received and he had already almost left the field before the Referee managed to pull out his red card which was brandished grandly aloft.Against a depleted and dispirited defence Ansty eagerly stepped up to duly and triumphantly score from the free kick and the contest was at an end.
K & H now have to lift themselves for one more game in next Saturday's play-off final but with only 10 fit players surviving Tuesday's ordeal the portents do not look good.
