Keymer & Hassocks vs The Hassocks Hornets
Cup
The long awaited clash between the Thoroughbreds and Hornets finally took place before a good crowd at the Adastra Field of Dreams-although disappointingly a few of the Hornets star players were missing-Rob Kift (wedding) Mark Chivers (injured) and Adam Ewens (scared). But The Thoroughbreds were also without influential Captain Ben Watson (Bad Toe).
It was felt the Hornets players might be overawed by the atmosphere at the Adastra Stadium but it was they who clicked into action first-Alex Pearce outjumping Matt Thomas and Duncan O’Reilly to nod home. The lead was short lived however as Jo Davey worked his way into the box to finish from close range.James Emmens added a second eluding the close attentions of Hornets Captain Billy Julian Ramos Bacon (bravely playing despite a nasty paper cut) who seemed to lose his bearings and as it turned out later on his temper.Emmens then set up James Harris with a smart cross which Harris despatched with a diving header
The Hornets were unlucky to lose central defender Matt Brown early on with a knee injury but seemed to recover passing the ball about well with Tubbs Matt Handy looking lively and Pete Williamson causing problems with his pace for veteran full back Mike (Iron(ing) ) Ridley.Leigh Tourle was also impressive in goal pulling off a remarkable double save
After the break the contest was evenly balanced for a while-Williamson worked a good opening but was denied by a fine Craig Jackson save-but the tide turned against the Hornets when K & H were able to bring on 3 fresh subs whilst they were starting to tire. Robin King fired in a hat-trick, Toby Raftery added from close range, Stuart Thompson misjudged a shot with only the keeper to beat.Biff (I thought I did alright) Southcombe seemed to have finally opened his scoring account after months of trying with a close range volley only for it to be cruelly ruled out for offside.Keeper Jackson stepped up near the end to convert a penalty kick---- 8-1 final score
